WINTER LIGHTS
This invitation isn’t just an ordinary invitation. The task was to create an invitation highlighting an event related to a person associated with a 3D discipline (architecture, sculpture, or industrial). The invitation was required to have a 3D structural quality related to the subject matter. Keeping the relationship between the envelope and invitation consistent, allowed for the exploration of expressive and illustrative potential both of typography and letterforms, along with the chosen artist’s/designer’s work. The envelope that was created had to be built in a manner to accommodate the insertion of the invitation. In addition to the invitation, street banners were designed as another way to show key information about the designer and the event. The designer I chose was Tom Dixon, a self-taught British industrial designer, and the event is a festive light installation in London. The invitation, when it stands on its own, takes the shape of Dixon’s geometric etch pendants. The inside of the invitation, when it is fully opened, contains some detailed information about the designer, whereas the front side includes information about the event. Black and white images from the light festival were used in the design of the invitation.
